AI Receptionist Pricing Compared: What 8 Services Really Cost in 2026

AI Receptionist Pricing Compared: What 8 Services Really Cost in 2026

The Short Answer

AI receptionists cost far less per call than live answering services, but their prices are not directly comparable because each one bills differently: per minute, per call, per unique caller, or a flat plan with credits. The cheapest plan for one business can be the most expensive for another.

We collected the published prices of eight well-known US services from their own pricing pages on October 6, 2026, and worked out what each would cost for the same example business. Prices change often, so confirm current pricing with each provider before you decide.

Published Pricing at a Glance

ServiceTypeEntry priceHow it bills
UpfirstAI$24.95 a month for 30 callsPer call, then $1.50 per extra call on the entry plan
DialzaraAI$29 a month for 60 minutesPer minute, then $0.48 per extra minute on the entry plan
RosieAI$49 a month for 250 minutesPer minute; booking and warm transfers start on the $149 plan
GoodcallAI$79 a month per agentPer unique customer: 100 included, then $0.50 each
FrontdeskAI$99 a month, or $79 billed annually200 voice minutes plus chat, text, and email allowances, then credits
Smith.aiAI with live agent backupFree for 25 calls, then $150 a month on ProPer call, about $2 per call on Pro
PATLiveLive receptionists$99 a month for 50 minutesPer minute, then $2.29 per extra minute on that plan
RubyLive receptionists$250 a month for 50 minutesPer minute

Synthflow, another well-known name, now sells enterprise contracts starting at $30,000 a year, so it is not in this small-business comparison.

What the Billing Models Mean

  • Per minute (Dialzara, Rosie, PATLive, Ruby): every minute on the phone counts. Good when calls are short; expensive when calls run long, such as detailed intake.
  • Per call (Upfirst, Smith.ai): a five-minute call costs the same as a one-minute call. Good for longer calls; less attractive if you get many very short calls.
  • Per unique customer (Goodcall): repeat calls from the same person do not add cost. Good when the same customers call several times.
  • Plan plus credits (Frontdesk): one plan covers voice, chat, text, and email, with credits for extra use. Good if you want several channels in one place.

A Worked Example: 150 Calls a Month

Take a home service business with 150 calls a month, averaging 3 minutes each, which is 450 minutes, from about 120 different callers. Here is roughly what each published plan would cost, using the lowest plan that covers the volume, before taxes and add-ons:

ServiceEstimated monthly costHow we got there
GoodcallAbout $89Starter at $79, plus 20 extra customers at $0.50
UpfirstAbout $120Premium at $59.95 for 90 calls, plus 60 calls at $1.00
FrontdeskAbout $130 to $150$79 to $99 plan with 200 minutes, plus credits for the rest, by our reading of its credit pricing
RosieAbout $149Scale plan with 1,000 minutes, which also includes booking and transfers
DialzaraAbout $199Business Plus with 500 minutes
Smith.aiAbout $300Pro at about $2 per call
PATLiveAbout $759500-minute live plan
RubyAbout $1,725500-minute live plan

The gap between AI and live answering is large: the AI options land between roughly $90 and $300 a month, while live receptionists cost several times more for the same minutes. Your numbers will differ with call length, repeat callers, and which features you need.

Features Matter as Much as Price

A cheap plan that cannot book appointments or transfer calls may cost you more in lost jobs. Before comparing prices, check:

  • Booking: can it book directly into your calendar or software, and on which plan?
  • Transfers: does it transfer calls to your team, and does it brief the person first?
  • Integrations: does it connect to your CRM or field service software, or only through Zapier?
  • Languages: do you need Spanish?
  • Human backup: do you want live agents available for complex calls?
  • Compliance: if you handle patient information, will the provider sign a business associate agreement, and on which plan?
  • Trial: Upfirst and PATLive list 14-day trials; Rosie, Dialzara, and Frontdesk list 7-day trials; Smith.ai has a free plan; Goodcall lists a free trial.

Costs These Prices Do Not Show

  • Your time to write the knowledge base, test calls, and tune the setup
  • Plan upgrades needed for booking, transfers, or integrations
  • Text messaging registration for business numbers in the US
  • Integration work if your software is not supported out of the box
  • The cost of mishandled calls while the setup is being tuned

When a Custom Build Makes Sense

Ready-made services are the right choice for most small businesses with straightforward calls. A custom AI receptionist built on a voice platform makes more sense when you have:

  • Booking rules a product cannot follow, such as provider-specific schedules or multiple locations
  • Software that ready-made products do not integrate with
  • Compliance requirements, such as HIPAA, that need specific agreements and controls
  • High call volume, where low per-minute platform costs beat per-call or per-minute plans

Custom builds cost more up front: our projects with integrations typically cost $5,000 to $15,000 to build. Running costs are usage-based; voice platform usage typically works out to roughly $0.09 to $0.17 a minute, by our reading of Vapi's and Retell AI's published rates, plus telephony and support. See our voice AI agent pricing guide and build vs. buy.

How to Choose

  1. Count last month's calls, average call length, and repeat callers.
  2. List the features you need: booking, transfers, integrations, languages, compliance.
  3. Price your volume on two or three services that offer those features.
  4. Test each with your own scenarios during the free trial.
  5. Measure booked jobs, not just answered calls.
